COLE WAS CONSTANTLY busy.

He was either working with his guys to make sure everything was in order or spending some time with his mom.

I was actually looking forward to seeing him at school today. Maybe he’d finally be mine for a while.

As soon as I spotted him standing next to his locker, I headed straight toward him.

But then I noticed the girl with long, dark red hair next to him. She was smiling at him so sweetly that it made me want to gag.

Who the hell was she?

I didn’t think I’d ever seen her before.

And why the hell was Cole talking to her?

Okay chill, Ava.

He can talk to whoever he wants.

It’s not like he’s flirting with her or anything.

But she was still grinning and twirling her hair around her finger.

Ugh.

Don’t think about it.

Don’t think about it.

It’s nothing.

Cole is hot.

Look at him.

Of course everyone’s going to want him, but he’s yours now.

As soon as he turned his head toward me, his lips spread into a smile.

“Ava,” he said, and I threw myself into his arms.

His lips found mine and I thought everything was finally right in the world.

Except that girl was still standing there.

She was glaring at us, annoyance crossing her face.

Huh.

“Ava, meet Elizabeth,” Cole said, and my brow furrowed. “Elizabeth, this is my girlfriend.”

“Hey,” she said, flashing me a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

“Hey,” I said, returning her smile, although I was still confused about who she was.

“Elizabeth is new here,” Cole said. “My mother brought her here.”

My eyebrows shot up. “Are you two—”

“Hell no,” Elizabeth said. “We’re not related. I met Cole’s mom during one of her trips. She kind of saved my life. We’re really good friends. I didn’t have a place to stay, so I tagged along.”

Fuck my life.

Did that mean Cole’s mother was going to stay?

And she’d actually gotten friendly with Elizabeth.

Huh.

Who would’ve thought? But then again, if she’d been all alone, maybe she’d needed someone, and Elizabeth was just what she’d been searching for.

“We need to talk. In private,” I said to Cole, tugging at his arm.

“Yeah, sure.”

But then his phone rang and I had to let go of him.

“Just a sec,” he said after glancing at the screen.

I supposed it was about his business.

He walked away from us, and I was alone with Elizabeth, whose gaze raked over me.

Elizabeth and Cole’s mother had a lot in common, didn’t they?

Their instant dislike for me being one of those things.

“It must be fun to fool around with a guy like Cole,” she said.

Fool around ?

“Um, it’s nice to be in a relationship with him, yes.”

“Wait, are you serious?” She let out a laugh and leaned toward me. “Don’t you know what he’s doing and who he is?”

“Yeah, I know everything.” But I had no clue why my relationship with Cole was any of her business.

Unless his mother had convinced her to pester me at school too.

Ugh.

“Ah. I see. So you’re planning to stay with him until graduation. That’s cool, I guess.”

“It’s not like that. We’re in love.
